Our work in Mexico
Mexico has a 2050 net zero goal and is targeting 45% renewable energy by 2030, yet wind and solar accounted for just 14% of the country's electricity generation in 2024. RE100 members source 38% of their electricity from renewables in Mexico, compared to 53% for RE100 member electricity use globally.

Recent updates from our work
- In May 2026, we formally launched our Mexico workstream.
Events held in Querétaro and Mexico City brought together policymakers, companies, academia, & media to discuss the evolving regulatory environment in Mexico and the role of corporate renewable electricity procurement in supporting Mexico's clean energy ambitions. These engagements highlighted recent policy developments, including the new framework for self-generation of renewable power in Mexico, and underscored the importance of collaboration across sectors to accelerate renewable electricity deployment.
- In February 2026, RE100 hosted its first dedicated member workshop in Mexico City. We presented our strategy for improving corporate access to credible renewable power and members shared first-hand experiences of renewable electricity procurement in Mexico.
- Also in February 2026, RE100 met with the Secretaría de Energía (SENER), Mexico's ministry of energy, and Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT), Mexico's Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. These meetings were our first engagements with the government and we used these opportunities to introduce our work and our policy objectives for the Mexican market. SENER expressed interest in further discussion on the challenges businesses are currently facing in procuring renewable power in Mexico.
In Mexico, we work in partnership with our local partner IDEA (Instituto de Desarrollo, Energía y Ambiente).
