Our work in Indonesia
Over 130 RE100 members report operations in Indonesia, yet fossil fuels currently dominate the country's power mix.
Indonesia has a 2060 net zero target, but wind and solar accounted for just 0.24% of Indonesia's electricity generation in 2022. RE100 members source 33% of their electricity from renewables in Indonesia, compared to 53% for RE100 member electricity use globally.
We are searching for our first Indonesian headquartered member to join us and help accelerate Indonesia's energy transition. Is your company interested in joining RE100? Start the process here.
Accelerating renewables investment in Indonesia
The shared use of Indonesia's transmission and distribution lines offers a promising solution that could unlock significant investment in renewables in Indonesia from large, international companies – including from RE100 members. In April 2025, RE100 published a report in partnership with the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), and the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), which recommends shared use of Indonesia's grid and how the Indonesian government could successfully implement it.
Recent policy updates
-
In September, high-level representatives from the Indonesian Government took part in a roundtable discussion on Indonesia’s energy transition at Climate Week NYC. This included His Excellency, Pak Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and Energy. Pak Hashim also spoke on a Climate Week NYC Hub Live panel, “The high stakes at hand – how to lead in an era of peril and possibility.”
-
In November 2025, RE100 and Indonesia’s state energy utility, PLN, and representatives from the Indonesia Energy Transition Implementation Joint Office (Rumah PATEN) met in Amsterdam and London to discuss strengthening the renewable energy certificates system and other corporate procurement options in Indonesia through alignment with RE100's Technical Criteria.
- In May 2025, RE100's report, report Accelerating renewables investment in Indonesia, was presented to the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Commission XII on Energy and Mineral Resources, Environment, and Investment, by IESR. The paper's recommendations were acknowledged by the commission members as pivotal.
Previous policy successes
- In August 2025, RE100 hosted a webinar for members on recent changes to Indonesia's solar quota system and on renewables procurement barriers faced by members in Indonesia. The session was run in collaboration with the Indonesian Solar Association (AESI) and featured a presentation by a representative of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
- RE100 publicly launched in Indonesia in August 2024 at IESR’s Indonesia Solar Summit. RE100 team members were in Jakarta to develop our approach to policy advocacy in the country, and were pleased to represent the needs of our members in closed-door meetings with His Excellency Luhut B. Pandjaitan, previous Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment Affairs in Indonesia, representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and in local media interviews.
- In August 2024, RE100 wrote to the President of Indonesia strongly encouraging Indonesia to increase its ambition on renewable electricity. Penned by CEO Helen Clarkson of Climate Group on behalf of RE100’s 430+ member companies, the letter sets out three key areas that RE100 members see as critical, which in turn will help unlock private investment in Indonesia’s renewable future: Increase ambition by setting a minimum 34% renewable energy target for 2030; increase the amount and pace of new renewable projects coming onto the grid via establishing a clearer green tariff structure; and create an electricity market that allows more direct sourcing options between corporate buyers and electricity producers. Full letter available here.
In Indonesia, we work in collaboration with our local partner Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR).
