It's Time to unleash renewables

The easy win for fast climate action and profitability.

Every year, the world’s falling further and further behind on its emissions targets and all carbon we are pumping into the atmosphere now, will remain there for hundreds of years. The only solution it to stop emitting now.

Switching to renewable energy is the fastest way to make a real impact on the climate crisis. Renewables have been proven to be cheaper than fossil fuels, they can be rolled out fast, we can and they’re profitable. Companies stand ready to invest at scale and speed, so having barriers to their deployment makes zero sense.  

Yet in many G20 countries permitting issues, regulations, and sometimes woefully unambitious targets are hampering the roll-out of renewables.  

In South Korea for example, strict permitting and siting rules are blocking the expansion of renewables on land, and offshore wind developments must obtain permits from as many as 10 administrative agencies under 29 different laws.  

Japan’s renewables targets don’t deliver on its commitment at COP28 to tripling installed renewable energy capacity by 2030, and its ambition on renewables is still significantly behind other G7 economies. 

And Mexico’s mixed investment and climate policy signals have stifled investment in renewables.  

Governments must break down barriers to the roll-out of renewable energy this year. It’s the only way to have any chance of reaching the G20 and COP28 commitment to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030.
