The methodology for calculating carbon abatement figures as been updated to reflect both the advances in carbon accounting and due to a previous technical error. The new methodology will be used from 2023 onwards. Additionally, we have restated the figures from previous reports using the new methodology. Please see those figures below.

2019 reported figures – the first reporting year

  • Figure as it appeared in the report (old methodology) – 6,624,401 metric tons of avoided GHG emissions by 2030

  • Restated figure (new methodology) – 993,050 projected annual avoided GHG emissions in 2030 based on the current year fleet

2020 reported figures

  • Figure as it appeared in the report (old methodology) – 41,897,077 metric tons of avoided GHG emissions by 2030

  • Restated figure (new methodology) – 658,293 projected annual avoided GHG emissions in 2030 based on the current year fleet

2021 reported figures

  • Figure as it appeared in the report (old methodology) – 75,524,099 metric tons of avoided GHG emissions by 2030

  • Restated figure (new methodology) – 10,5669,795 projected annual avoided GHG emissions in 2030 based on the current year fleet

2022 reported figures

  • Figure as it appeared in the report (old methodology) – 85,637,124 metric tons of avoided GHG emissions by 2030

  • Restated figure (new methodology) – 6,787,794 projected annual avoided GHG emissions in 2030 based on the current year fleet

As evident from the figures above, the carbon abatement calculations have fluctuated over time. The large increase in 2020 is due to a growth in the number of members and a high average annual distance per vehicle reported in that year by members. This reported value was lower in 2021 and 2022 which uses a new method to apply the average distance more accurately to the vehicle fleet showing a further reduction.
