Global Policy Principles

The Smart Energy Coalition is championing corporate leadership on energy efficiency and driving progress on three high-impact areas – AI and data centre innovation; smarter cooling and heating; and energy efficiency’s role in energy security. With global momentum building and urgent climate goals on the horizon, the Coalition is stepping up to turn ambition into action. 

Crafted with the support of the Smart Energy Coalition’s Global Policy Working Group, the Coalition has set five policy principles to guide our policy advocacy work in these three areas. Central to accelerated action on energy efficiency, they focus on:

1. Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and codes
2. Energy management and data transparency
3. Circularity and renovation
4. Financing
5. Collaboration and leadership

Inside the open letter

In an open letter, ten leading members of the Smart Energy Coalition have publicly backed these five principles. 

Our members have seen first hand how investments in energy efficient technologies and operations can lower costs, improve productivity, and strengthen long-term competitiveness.

Household names like ABB, Danfoss and Johnson Controls have urged policymakers around the world to drive up global energy efficiency by taking steps such as setting higher minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for key appliances like air conditioners, fridges and freezers and lighting.

The commitment made at COP28 by countries to double the annual rate of energy efficiency improvement by 2030 put energy efficiency at the centre of the global climate agenda. To reach this goal, this letter urges policymakers at all levels to prioritise energy efficiency and to make it a cornerstone of their energy strategies.
