Here's more information on joining the Smart Energy Coalition and what it means to be a member.
Meeting the joining criteria
Companies must meet certain requirements (i.e. size, sector) outlined in the joining criteria.
Choosing an ambitious target
Companies must set an ambitious energy efficiency target by making the following commitment:
- Double Energy Productivity: A company commits to double its economic output from every unit of energy it consumes globally by 2040 (or sooner) from a fixed baseline year no earlier than 10 years prior to joining the initiative. The company chooses a relevant energy productivity metric (e.g. units of product/gigawatts (GW); full time employees/megawatt hours (MWh)) to track and report progress. See the detailed commitment criteria for more information.
Applying for membership
This is a staged process, outlined here. Companies will be thoroughly assessed against the joining criteria to determine eligibility and we will carry out a due diligence process. Where questions arise or issues of concern are identified, we may seek to discuss these with the company prior to determining eligibility.
Once eligibility has been established and the application has been accepted, communication of the joining announcement will be agreed with Climate Group.
Implementing energy efficiency solutions
Tap into the huge potential of energy efficiency:
Invest in energy efficiency improvements across your company's operations by installing highly efficient technologies, making organisational changes, incentivising behaviour change and more. Make the most of every unit of energy your company consumes to make progress against your Smart Energy commitment.
Share your journey with us:
We share the compelling business case for better energy efficiency; encourage knowledge-sharing and peer-learning through member-exclusive webinars and events; and showcase member leadership by offering speaking slots at key events and through digital media and media outreach. To do this, we need your energy efficiency stories.
Reporting progress annually
All Smart Energy Coalition companies must report annually on their progress towards achieving their target. Companies report in two different ways depending on their chosen commitment:
- Double Energy Productivity: Companies must report directly to us using our EP100 reporting form on an annual basis. Companies must report company-level total economic output and total energy consumption data, broken down by fuel type, starting from the baseline year. Insight on the drivers and barriers to achieving energy efficiency improvements and examples of successful implementation are welcomed.
The data is published in our annual Progress and Insights Reports and provide us with information on the drivers of, and barriers to, corporate energy efficiency action. Your data is crucial in helping us guide our strategic work.
Communicating the barriers faced
Implementing energy efficiency solutions in some markets is challenging and we recognise that corporate ambition may outpace feasibility in some areas.
If a company is struggling to achieve their target because cost-effective solutions have been exhausted, this doesn't represent a failure of the company. Rather, it is an opportunity to use their influence in combination with other members and supporting organisations to advocate for market change.
Once cost-effective energy efficiency solutions are being / have been exhausted, we recommend that:
- Companies communicate transparently and publicly on the barriers they face in those markets and countries, as their voices are powerful.
- Companies operating in the country come together to discuss shared barriers and to develop a solution. We exist to support this process and are happy to discuss opportunities to connect members in markets where ambitious energy efficiency improvements are particularly challenging.
- Companies engage with key stakeholders such as governments and financial institutions to develop new options that suit their needs.
