Net Zero Futures

Mobilising global state and regional leadership on net zero ambition in 2021.

Net Zero Futures
Net Zero Leaders

Helping states and regions to net zero emissions

Led by our co-chair Scotland, in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Climate Group, Net Zero Futures will connect Under2 Coalition members with existing net zero targets with states and regions interested in increasing their ambition to:

  • Participate in peer learning activities to demystify net zero
  • Share learnings and challenges
  • Empower states and regions to join the UN’s Race to Zero campaign

A dedicated Net Zero Leaders group will demonstrate how ambitious targets and can be set - and achieved - and support other states and regions in making progress.

Why net zero?

To accelerate emissions reductions in line with the Paris Agreement and raise ambition in 2021, we need to empower state and regional governments to set net zero targets and develop decarbonisation pathways: delivering long-term emissions reductions and sustainable development.

32 members of the Under2 Coalition currently have net zero targets, with many more in development. The Net Zero Futures initiative will help us to harness the expertise we already have to support those states and regions that want to achieve net zero but are unsure about the process.

To help achieve a just transition to net zero – Scotland is working with partners, not just within our own borders, but also right around the world.

We are an enthusiastic partner in the Under2 Coalition of cities and regions – in fact we are the European co-chair of that Coalition this year.

And we are keen to encourage even deeper levels of cooperation. That is why Scotland is launching a new Net Zero Leaders Group with Bloomberg Philanthropies. We hope that it will strengthen state and regional leadership on climate ambition, in advance of COP26.

Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland

Race to Zero

Race to Zero

We are officially partnered with the UNFCCC's Race to Zero campaign. All states and regions taking part in Net Zero Futures will be supported to join the Race to Zero, which is intended to rally leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions, investors for a healthy, resilient, zero carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates decent jobs and unlocks inclusive, sustainable growth.
