Under2 Coalition highlights 2021

2021 was a significant year for the Under2 Coalition and for state and regional climate action.

In July the Coalition's membership reached 260 governments, representing 1.75 billion people and 50% of global GDP and reinforcing its position as the largest group of subnational actors committed to ambitious climate action in line with the Paris Agreement.

This was followed by a strong turnout at COP26 in Glasgow in November, where more than 60 subnational governments came together at the Under2 General Assembly. Here they shared examples of effective policies and actions they had taken across the year and looked for new ways to go even further in the year ahead. This included a set of 2030 commitments covering sectors as varied as land use, transport and the built environment.

State and regional voices were heard at the highest level in 2021 but this is only the beginning of our work. As we continue into 2022 it will be more important than ever to reflect the full range of member concerns in our work, from loss and damage to just transition, and to keep pushing for state and regional governments to have a seat at the table in international climate negotiations. This is an urgent decade for our planet and it is vital that all actors move further, faster and - most importantly - together to find solutions to the climate challenges we all face.
