A state on the verge of change and a pathway for continuity: Quintana Roo, Mexico

Case study 25 October 2021, 12:39 BST

With the support of the Climate Pathway Project, Quintana Roo, Mexico, has developed a pathway to decarbonisation that will allow it to meet its targets of 21% emissions reduction by 2030 and 63% emissions reduction by 2050 (compared to 2016 levels).

One of the sectors that Quintana Roo is focussing on through its emissions reduction pathway is waste - with a vision for all waste in the state to be transformed into energy.

By considering effective stakeholder engagement and institutional coordination, the state is progressing its decarbonisation efforts and showing to other governments that, with buy-in from other government departments as well as civil society, business and industry, the climate emergency can be addressed.
