Take action

Everyone has a role to play in accelerating the switch to zero emission vehicles. Here's what you can do.

Automotive manufacturing

What?

Take action by committing to 100% zero emission vehicle production as soon as possible, and scaling up vehicle availability.

Who?

Manufacturers and suppliers of any automotive vehicle.

How?

Communicate a public commitment to 100% zero emission vehicle sales in line with the Race to Zero Breakthroughs:

  • Buses,  2- and 3-wheelers by 2030
  • Light duty vehicles (cars and vans) by 2035
  • Heavy duty vehicles by 2040

Fleets

What?

Take action by transforming fleets to 100% zero emission vehicles.

Who?

Businesses and public sector bodies which own, operate or use third party vehicle fleets.

How?

Communicate a public commitment to switching fleets to 100% zero emission vehicles as soon as possible, signalling demand to automotive manufacturers and policymakers.

Businesses can use their purchasing power and influence to shift the market by committing to switch their fleets to zero emission vehicles by 2030 through EV100.

Infrastructure

What?

Take action by delivering the infrastructure required for an accelerated uptake of zero emission vehicles.

Who?

Utilities, energy companies, property owners, local government and industry.

How?

Communicate a public commitment to delivering zero emission vehicle infrastructure with clear timescales, increasing confidence that a faster transition is possible.

Businesses can commit to installing charging infrastructure for customers and employees through EV100.

Policy

What?

Take action by introducing supportive policy to accelerate uptake of zero emission vehicles.

Who?

National governments, cities, states and regions

How?

Introduce effective policy to require, enable, accelerate and incentivise the transition to zero emission vehicles, such as:

  • 100% zero emission vehicle sales mandates
  • Zero Emission Areas
  • CO₂ emission performance standards for cars and vans
  • Incentive schemes for purchasing and operating zero emission vehicles

The Global New Mobility Coalition has developed a Zero Emission Area Handbook with McKinsey, which provides a useful, interactive resource for cities and mobility operators on how to enable zero emission areas (ZEAs) and learn from each other.

Finance and investment

What?

Take action by engaging on and escalating issues related to transport emissions and climate change, or developing innovative financing products that will enable a faster transition to zero emission vehicles.

Who?

Financial institutions, institutional investors, pension trustees, asset managers.

How?

Recognise and publicise climate-related transition risks, particularly for the automotive industry, and engage with companies to ensure strategies are aligned with science-based, net zero plans (including scope 3 emissions).

General public

What?

Take action by helping to reduce the number of polluting vehicles on road.

Who?

Any person where transport is a part of their lives.

How?

Choose alternative modes of transport such as walking, cycling, public transport and electric vehicles, wherever possible.

Individuals can pledge to make their next car purchase an electric vehicle through Count Us In.
