What is 24/7 carbon-free electricity (CFE)?

It means operating on 100% carbon-free electricity, 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.

It works by matching electricity demand with carbon-free generation, where and when consumption occurs.

It's the next frontier in renewable electricity procurement

Location-based matching gives a clear demand signal to show where more carbon-free electricity is needed. By purchasing it ​on the electricity grids ​where consumption occurs, companies can drive greater impact in the communities where they operate.

24/7 carbon-free electricity will encourage innovation by deploying a broad set of technologies – including increasing renewables, improving battery storage, and using flexible and dispatchable tech to fill gaps when more intermittent carbon-free sources aren’t available.

Forward-thinking leaders are making waves

Innovative corporates have already taken steps towards powering their operations with hourly matched CFE and are sharing their experiences to support other organisations on their own journeys. Google, AstraZeneca, Iron Mountain Data Centers, Shree Cement, Vodafone (UK) and AirTrunk have joined the 24/7 Carbon-Free Coalition as Founding Partners to work with us to shape the campaign before we launch in Spring 2026.

These corporates are guided by the key principles of 24/7 carbon-free electricity, which are:

  1. Time matched: matching electricity consumption with carbon-free electricity generation each hour.
  2. Locally matched: procuring electricity on the local electricity grid where consumption occurs.
  3. Decarbonising: focusing on actions, investments, regions and technologies that have the greatest and most rapid decarbonising impact.
