The Prime Minister has today announced a new ambitious target to reduce the UK’s emissions by at least 68% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels.

CEO of international non-profit the Climate Group, Helen Clarkson, says: “It is necessary for the UK Government to be bold – this is a big ambition and I applaud the Prime Minister for making this public commitment. For those who question the importance of the COP process, this is part of its success – that it allows nations to demonstrate leadership and cultivates healthy competition on the race to net zero.

“The critical thing is now turning this commitment into action. There’s a potentially huge win for governments around the world in using post-COVID recovery spending to deliver on climate ambition while creating jobs now and into the future. The UK has an opportunity to set an example in this regard as well, which will be the true legacy of being the COP host.”
