We condemn the recent rise of anti-Asian hate crimes happening globally. Anti-Asian sentiment is not a novel thing, but violence against the community has increased during the global pandemic as a result of deeply rooted systemic racism, white supremacy, and irresponsible hate speech.
The history of Asians and Pacific Islanders is complex. The damaging model minority myth silences them, undermines the racism they face, and alludes to the false perceptions of success. Due to this perception of success and social elevation, racism and hate crimes targeted at Asians and Pacific Islanders often go unnoticed.
We stand in solidarity with the Asian and Pacific Islander community and do not tolerate xenophobia or discrimination. We acknowledge that the climate community has often stayed silent on these issues. As an organization who is committed to building a more equitable and inclusive future, we will continue to listen, learn and take action to achieve racial and social justice.
