Over 20 major companies have pledged ambitious climate action on World Environment Day today. As leaders from around the world discuss how to organise a green economic recovery after the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic is over, these businesses are leading the charge by signing up to international non-profit The Climate Group’s corporate leadership initiatives on renewables (RE100), electric vehicles (EV100) and smart energy use (EP100). Together, these initiatives aim to drive carbon reductions at scale in the shortest time possible.

As markets evolve and expectations grow, the leadership bar is rising for global companies on their use of clean energy. This year we’ll be celebrating the RE100 members taking their pioneering renewable electricity commitments to the next level. The first ever RE100 Leadership Awards 2020 have been launched by The Climate Group in partnership with CDP.

Monday 1 June, London – The international non-profit The Climate Group is today announcing a new partnership with BT Group: the UK Electric Fleets Coalition, to promote a faster switch to electric vehicles (EVs). Incorporating Openreach, the digital network business, BT Group operates the second largest corporate vehicle fleet in the UK.

Thursday 28 May, London – The UK government has today confirmed that the UN climate change conference, COP26, will be held in November 2021 in Glasgow, having initially been due to take place in November 2020. 

On Wednesday, May 23, 2020, 23 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and four major cities filed suit against the Trump administration over the rollbacks of fuel efficiency standards.

The emergence of a new threat – COVID-19 – has shaken the world and renewed calls for a more resilient and sustainable economies. Amid this, we are also at the start of the Climate Decade – a moment in history where greater and faster action is vital to address the looming threat of climate change. This being a critical year, the start of the climate decade, our focus on transitioning to low-carbon, resilient energy systems must not falter.

The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, has today presented a new proposal for the EU’s updated seven-year €1 trillion budget and a recovery plan to help economies emerge from the COVID-19 crisis.
