Business backs vehicle emissions laws – letter to EU policy makers

Companies have called on the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, to push ahead with 2020 CO2 targets for cars, vans and trucks.

A letter coordinated by Transport & Environment and signed by nine multinational companies responds to attempts by some auto industry lobbyists to seek delays to the regulations. It says green stimuli are needed to ensure the EU economy emerges from COVID-19 stronger and more resilient to the climate crisis.

The private sector signatories are members of The Climate Group’s EV100 initiative: Danfoss, Grundfos, Ingka Group, LeasePlan, METRO AG, Novo Nordisk, Signify, Unilever and Vattenfall. They are committed to switching to electric transport by 2030 and want to see a faster roll out of electric vehicles.

“While overall vehicle registrations have gone down over recent months, EV sales have grown, creating jobs and economic opportunities. This is where the future lies, and what Europe should focus on for its recovery.

“Now more than ever, policy makers need to keep the momentum going, and accelerate the transition with smart green stimulus measures – not back down to auto lobby demands to roll back our climate ambition.”

Sandra Roling, Head of EV100, Climate Group

69 EV100 members are already looking to electrify over 2.5 million vehicles by 2030, and around half of these – over a million – are in the EU. A recent report by The Climate Group found a lack of supply of EVs is the biggest barrier they face – both in terms of variety of models and volume of production.

Several manufactures, including Volkswagen, have called for the EU targets to go ahead.
